How You Can Avoid Cavities

How You Can Avoid Cavities

One of the major problems we face regarding our teeth is cavities. Cavities are also called tooth decay. This happens because of a substance called plaque. Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on teeth. The combination of sugar and this sticky substance produce acid, which results in damage to tooth enamel.

Tooth decay can be avoided by following a few simple instructions.

Brushing

Brush your teeth regularly. Brushing your teeth is the first line of defence against cavity formation and minimizes the bacterial activity in your mouth. Brush your teeth with proper toothpaste and a good-quality toothbrush. To avoid cavities, using a toothpaste with fluoride is highly recommended.

Flossing

Whenever you eat something, there is a chance that food debris will stick in between your teeth. To get rid of this food debris, floss daily. Flossing is the best way to avoid cavity formation in your teeth. Along with brushing teeth regularly, flossing enables you to remove food debris from teeth that could turn into plaque.

Healthy Diet

Dental health is very important, as is the role of proper nutrition in dental health. Good dental health depends, in part, on your diet. You should eat a diet of healthy food. Drinks with high sugar content are one of the factors behind the formation of cavities. You should avoid drinks that have a high sugar content to avoid cavities.

Dental Check-Up

Regular check-ups from your dentist give you valuable knowledge about your teeth. Regular visits to your dentist also enable him or her to detect any cavities that may be forming. By using X-rays, your dentist can check the health of your teeth.

Sealants

There are protective coatings, known as dental sealants, which can help protect your teeth. These sealants enable the tooth to avoid cavity formation by shielding against bacteria and plaque. These dental sealants act as protective shields and are applied at the biting surfaces of the back teeth, which make them more stable. Sealants are beneficial for both adults and children. However, the sealants are more beneficial for children due to new growth of permanent teeth.

Rinsing

After eating and brushing your teeth, use mouth rinse aids with anti-microbial properties. Mouth rinses are also known as mouthwash. There are antiseptic and anti-plaque mouthwashes, which fight against microbial activity. Some mouthwashes also contain fluoride as an active ingredient for protection against cavity formation and tooth decay. Several clinically-proven antimicrobial mouth rinses are available on the market and can be used to guard against microbial activity.

Chewing Gum

There are many varieties of chewing gum which don’t have sugar in them. Chewing sugarless gum aids in fighting cavity formation. Chewing these sugarless gums help in the prevention of dental cavities by enhancing or increasing saliva flow in the mouth. The more saliva produced, the more anti-bacterial activity there is in the mouth.
